Secure, Accurate, and Practical Narrow-Band Ranging System

Relay attacks pose a serious security threat to wireless systems, such as, contactless payment keyless entry or smart access control systems. Distance bounding protocols, which allow an entity not only authenticate another but also determine whether it is physically close by, effectively mitigate relay attacks. However, secure implementation of distance especially the time critical challenge-response phase, has been challenging task. In this paper, we design and implement accurate protocol based on Narrow-Band signals, as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), particularly ranging, specifically, phase-based enables measurement, vulnerable phase rollover our solution, by measuring time-of-flight (ToF) detect delay introduced Therefore, combines best both worlds: ranging for accuracy measurement security. To demonstrate feasibility practicality prototype NXP KW36 BLE chips evaluate its performance attack resistance. The obtained precision presented solution are 2.5 cm 30 cm, respectively, in measurements.
